Multimedia Reporting

I have a passion for storytelling. Today, I get to tell the stories of people across the San Antonio area. Previously, I worked as a multimedia journalist for KOMU 8 News. I have more than four years of experience in pitching, shooting, writing, editing and fronting stories in less than an eight-hour shift. More recently, I’ve gotten into long-form reporting. Whether it be a feature story about a Jefferson City man running 20 miles a day for 28 straight days for mental health awareness or a six-month investigation on the economic and social impacts of a nearly $300 million dollar health institute, I push for my stories to not only address problems people face but also provide answers and solutions.

Attached below are both my television reel and montage of social media clips. Here are the links to three of my favorite stories from my time at KOMU 8 News:

CURRENT MMJ REEL

Attached is my most current MMJ reel. In the video, you’ll see about a one-minute montage of reporter live shots and standups, and then three packages. The first package is an investigative story I worked on for the final installment of the series I co-created, “The Push for Precision.” This series won a regional Edward R. Murrow in 2022 for innovation and a regional Mid-America Emmy for “Continuing Coverage”. The following two packages are day-turn stories.

REPORTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA

I’m a broadcast journalist who prioritizes digital-first. Out in the field, I tweet, post pictures on Instagram and update followers on Facebook. Here are a few clips that are examples of my video content across platforms. Below is a slideshow of my use of Twitter during reporting shifts, whether that’s in breaking news or a standard day-turn shift. I prioritize easy-to-understand language and using photos and videos on social media.

Anchoring

A lot can happen in thirty seconds of television. From behind the anchor desk, I’ve seen election results roll in and city council decisions made while we’re on the air. In the anchor seat, there’s more responsibility than just reading the teleprompter. As an anchor, I work to best deliver a story — whether that’s helping producers to write, edit and track cold package opens; interacting with rolling bams, video and sound; or delivering breaking news accurately and confidently.

Attached below are my anchoring reel and a full A-block anchoring from KOMU 8 News. If you click here, you can watch a montage of happy talk, chat and weather tosses to the meteorologists.

FULL A-BLOCK OF ANCHORING

Attached above is the entire A-block of a recent Sunday morning newscast. I also co-produced the newscast.

Other Experiences

My journalism career started in high school. In 2019, I was named the runner up for the National Student Journalist of the Year competition held by the National Scholastic Press Association. I wrote for my high school newspaper and anchored the daily morning announcements across all four years. Click here to see my high school journalism portfolio.
